What sins do you need to work on? Let’s plunge into the Deeper Waters and find out.
Okay. Somehow I goofed. I normally write these blogs in advance and there should have been something for today, but apparently I messed up. So, I figure I need to write something anyway since I tend to be a perfectionist like that and this is something I plan to write on for my own substack so why not start it now. (If you are interested in my substack, it can be found here.)
Many of you know that a favorite TV series of mine is still Smallville. Whenever Clark Kent in the series gets exposed to red kryptonite, he loses all his inhibitions and becomes more of a villainous Clark Kent. Other things have happened in the town that has had the same effect on some citizens, such that even Jonathan Kent, Clark’s Dad, ended up shooting his son with a shotgun before losing consciousness.
Something I have thought along these lines is the only person who ever walked the Earth who would be unaffected by a red k type effect would be Jesus Christ. Red k or anything similar brings out the darker side that is suppressed by a person. It causes them to act on the desires that they keep hidden.
I am going through a game with a similar theme now involving an inner darkness that can lurk in a person’s heart. Many times, I have been tempted to think that it’s easy to look at the world around me and see various people I know who have their own inner darkness and imagine what it would be like for them to have their darkness manifest in a real way.
It sure is easy to do that.
What’s harder is to realize that I too would have my own darkness and it would be horrible just as much to see it manifest.
Now some could say, “But you seem like such a good person!” which I hope, but that could make it even worse. Many people who resist temptation strongly and live good lives could lead some of the worst if they ever did a 180. If I were to examine my own life in such a way, what would happen? What if you were? If you find that scary, you’re not alone. If you don’t find it scary, I think you could be in grave danger indeed if you ever turned the 180.
So my charge to you is to try to think about what could happen and then realize what sins you really do struggle with that you might not realize. It’s easy to think you don’t commit the big sins, but inside, you’re struggling with a whole slew of sins. This was the attitude Jesus took to the Pharisees. On the outside, they were highly devout people. On the inside, they were whitewashed tombs full of death entirely.
Reality is that in many ways, Jesus could say that of us as well. It’s why we need to keep eliminating those sins within. Of course, avoid the outward sins, but also deal with the inward desires that lead to those sins anyway.
We’ll get back to Ecclesiastes tomorrow.
In Christ,
Nick Peters
